QUALIFICATIONS


Interested in children, their rights, and special needs.

  1. Posses emotional maturity, stability and common sense.
  2. Be objective and flexible.
  3. Exhibit self assurance and assertiveness. 
  4. Have the ability to deal with hostility and rejection.
  5. Be able to keep information confidential.
  6. Be able to work within established guidelines.
  7. Have the ability to interview, observe, listen and analyze written material. 
  8. Be able to write clearly and concisely.
  9. Have the ability to make decisions and set goals.
  10. Be willing to commit to the program for a minimum of 18 months.
  11. Be 21 years of age.
  12. High school graduate or GED diploma.
  13. Complete 24 hours of training.
  14. 6 hours of court observation.


ACCOUNTABILITY


Upon successful completion of application, background and reference checks, personal interview, pre-service training, court observations, the CASA volunteer may be formally accepted as an advocate at the swearing-in ceremony. The CASA reports directly to the Executive Director.


 Responsibilities: 

  1. Complete application.
  2. Cooperate with reference and background checks.
  3. Successfully complete 30 hours of pre-service training.
  4. Sign confidentiality policy and oath to avoid conflicts of interest.
  5. Accept the assignment of a case as agreed between the Executive Director and reading the case file.
  6. Plan the strategy after meeting with the Executive Director and reading the case file.
  7. Research the case, review record, and interview the parties (child, family members, foster family, teachers, social workers, and other interested parties).
  8. Maintain complete written records of the case including appointments, interviews and any information gathered on the case.
  9. Continue to consult with the Executive Director throughout the case.
  10. Prepare written reports for the courts two weeks prior to the court hearing to be reviewed and approved by the Executive Director.
  11. Attend all court hearings for the case and assure that the best interest of the child(ren) are being representing at every stage of the process.
  12. Attend DCFS's Administrative Case Reviews for the case.
  13. While assigned to the case, continue contact with the child(ren) at least monthly.
  14. Determine whether appropriate services, including reasonable efforts, are being provided for the child and family.
  15. Continue to monitor the case for a period of assignment to assure compliance with the court orders and to notify the court if such orders are being violated.
  16. Determine if a permanent plan has been developed for the child .
  17. Work cooperatively with others within the child welfare system to strive for a permanency plan that best suits the child(ren).
  18. Attend 12 hours of in-service education annually.
  19. Complete monthly data sheets for the program.
  20. Participate in annual review.
  21. Accept, adhere to and support the mission and policies of CASA of Jefferson County.
